Keep bank and insurance nominations up to date

A nomination helps an institution identify whom to deal with after a death, but bank deposits and life insurance do not share identical legal rules. Check the newer banking options, document the nomination properly and prepare a usable family information file.

Nomination helps access, but is only one part of planning

After an account holder dies, relatives may know money exists but lack the account details or authority needed to approach the institution. A recorded nomination can help the bank identify the claimant and follow its settlement process. It does not give that person your password, present-day signing authority or unrestricted access while you are alive. Avoid confusing nomination with joint ownership, an operating mandate or a power of attorney. Each serves a different purpose.

Start with an inventory of deposits, lockers and insurance policies. For each item, record the institution, a limited reference, ownership, nomination status and location of the supporting document. Keep this inventory private and tell a trusted person where to find it. A nomination that exists only in your memory or in a form never accepted by the institution may not provide the continuity you expect. The institution’s recorded acknowledgement is the useful evidence.

Understand the banking changes effective from November 2025

Banking nomination provisions brought into effect on 1 November 2025 allow up to four nominees. For deposit accounts, the framework permits either simultaneous or successive nomination. Under simultaneous nomination, the shares assigned to the nominees must total 100 per cent. Under successive nomination, priority determines which nominee becomes operative if a higher-priority nominee has died. Use the institution’s current form and instructions rather than an old template downloaded years earlier.

For illustration, simultaneous shares of 50, 30 and 20 per cent total 100 per cent. Those percentages describe the nomination instruction, not investment returns. A successive list of three people does not divide the deposit into three equal shares; it establishes an order. Ask the bank to explain the choice in a language you understand, particularly if the form combines several account types. Keep a copy showing the option actually registered, including the nominees’ names and relevant details.

Do not copy deposit instructions onto a locker form

The newer framework allows only successive nominations for articles in safe custody and contents of safe-deposit lockers. This differs from the simultaneous option for deposit accounts. A locker nomination also does not prove that every item inside belongs beneficially to a particular nominee. Access, inventory and the eventual rights of family members are separate questions that may depend on the agreement, ownership and succession law.

Prepare a private description of the locker location, operating arrangement and where the agreement is kept. Do not keep the only key, all supporting records and every contact detail inside the locker itself. Ask how the bank handles joint holders, a deceased holder and a minor nominee under the current rules. Avoid assuming that the same nomination on one savings account automatically covers a separate locker or all other deposits at the branch.

Distinguish receiving a bank deposit from inheritance

RBI guidance on deceased depositors distinguishes the bank’s payment to a valid nominee from the rights of legal heirs. A bank nominee generally receives the deposit through the institution’s settlement mechanism; that payment does not automatically extinguish other inheritance claims. Therefore, avoid a blanket statement that adding a nominee decides who finally owns every rupee. A will, applicable succession law and the facts can still matter.

If a family expects a particular distribution, seek appropriate legal advice and keep the nomination consistent with the broader plan as far as legally possible. This is especially useful for blended families, dependants, substantial assets or possible disputes. A bank employee can explain the bank’s forms and claim process, but should not be treated as the final adviser on a contested estate. Do not promise relatives that a nomination guarantees the absence of litigation or additional documentation.

Read life-insurance nomination under its own law

Section 39 of the Insurance Act deals with nomination for a policy on the policyholder’s own life. It includes special provisions for qualifying nominees such as parents, spouse or children to be beneficially entitled, subject to the section’s conditions and exceptions. This is why the broad banking shorthand that every nominee is only a trustee should not be copied automatically into a life-insurance explanation. The policy’s structure and any assignment also require attention.

Check the policy schedule and the insurer’s acknowledgement rather than relying solely on a bank nomination or a proposal form you once signed. Confirm nominee names, relationships, shares where relevant and contact information. If there is an assignment, a trust arrangement or a policy affected by the Married Women’s Property Act, get advice on the actual documents. Health, accident and other insurance products can have different benefit and claim arrangements, so do not assume that one life-policy explanation covers them all.

Handle minor nominees and life changes carefully

Where a nominee is a minor, follow the applicable provisions for the person authorised to receive on the minor’s behalf. Record the required information accurately and check what changes when the child reaches adulthood. The banking and insurance documents may use different wording or require different supporting information. Do not choose an adult merely because a form needs a name without considering whether that person can actually help the child when needed.

Review nominations after marriage, separation, divorce, a birth, a death, a move or a major change in dependency. These events do not justify guessing how the institution’s record changes automatically. Submit an update or cancellation through the proper process and obtain acknowledgement. Check each product separately, including an old deposit renewed over time. A family contact written in your phone and a formally registered nominee are not the same record.

Prepare a claim file without exposing account secrets

A practical family file can identify the institution, branch, account or policy reference, ownership, nomination acknowledgement and customer-support route. Include where the original documents can be found and how to obtain official copies if needed. Keep it secure and update it periodically. The file should help a claimant contact the institution; it should not contain an instruction to impersonate the deceased or use their banking credentials.

After a death, ask the bank or insurer for its current claim form and document checklist. Identity, proof of death and evidence relevant to the claimant will generally matter, but the precise requirements depend on the product and facts. Keep copies of submissions and acknowledgements. If additional documents are requested, ask why they are needed for this case. Avoid paying a stranger who promises instant release of every account in exchange for passwords, OTPs or an advance fee.

Complete a documented annual review

Choose one date each year to check the inventory against current statements and policy records. Confirm that the nominee is still appropriate, details remain usable and the institution has actually registered the instruction. If several nominees are used, verify the percentage total or priority order as applicable. Read the acknowledgement rather than assuming that a submitted form was accepted exactly as completed. Ask for correction of a spelling error while you can easily provide identification.

Keep nomination planning connected to emergency money, insurance adequacy and lawful succession planning. Nomination does not create insurance cover, increase a deposit balance or guarantee immediate access during a living account holder’s illness. A household may need separate arrangements for those situations. This guide is general education: when ownership or inheritance is uncertain, obtain advice on the actual account, policy and applicable law instead of relying on a universal slogan about nominees.

Readers’ questions

Can I nominate four people for both a deposit and a locker?

The banking framework effective from November 2025 permits up to four nominees, but the method differs. Deposit accounts permit simultaneous or successive nominations; lockers and safe-custody articles permit successive nominations. Follow the bank’s current form for the specific product. Four names alone do not explain whether the instruction assigns shares or sets priority, so check the recorded acknowledgement.

Does naming my spouse make a will unnecessary?

Nomination and a will serve different functions, and the legal effect also differs between bank deposits and some life-insurance nominations. Do not assume that one nomination settles every asset or every possible inheritance issue. A coordinated estate plan can consider dependants, ownership and succession rules. Seek appropriate legal advice when a particular distribution matters or family circumstances are complex.

Can the nominee use my account while I am alive?

Nomination itself does not grant present-day authority to operate your account. If you need someone to assist during illness or absence, ask the bank about lawful arrangements appropriate to your circumstances and understand their limits. Never solve an access problem simply by handing over your PIN and password. Keep nomination records separate from any approved operating mandate or other authority.
